Natural Remedies for ADHD in Your Child – Looking Closer at Resveratrol, Grape Seed Extract & Sensoril

If you are concerned about the effects of pharmaceutical medication use with your child you are not alone. Here’s a possible natural remedy.

Many parents fear the side effects of medication and also the effects man-made chemical compounds can have on the susceptible and developing brain of a child.

However if you are looking for ways to help your child’s condition, certain natural supplements can be used to treat some symptoms.

This article will explore specifically the supplements of resveratrol, grape seed extract and Sensoril to show if or how they have been known to provide benefits to relieving symptoms of varying disorders or diseases in childhood.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is found in the skin of grapes, but also in blueberries, raspberries and mulberries.  This compound is a polyphenol (a type of chemical structure which may be organic or synthetic) and is also an antioxidant.

Toxins have been known to disturb brain structure and function which in turn can affect and produce some symptoms known in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism spectrum Disorder.  Many recent studies conclude that Resveratrol can block toxins and protect nerves from getting damaged by infection.

While the research only targets animals for now, there is a great deal of research which states resveratrol can improve brain function by helping repair and prevent brain cell damage caused by toxins.

Resveratrol can also reduce inflammation caused by dietary intolerances.  Such inflammation can produce changes to the gut and brain which in turn can affect brain function or alter brain chemistry.

However, some studies conducted refer to the positive changes in brains of adult and older mice and rats, whereas results on young mice and rats are inconclusive.

There was a 12 week study conducted from a children’s research institute in Australia which found Resveratrol was effective in treating Friedreich Ataxia by improving some individuals’ clinical and biological symptoms.

Fredereich Ataxia is a disease which is inherited and causes damage progressively to the nervous system.

There are many stories and experiences documented on the internet of positive benefits of reseveratrol in children who exhibit symptoms of ADHD and Autism.

However there is no way to tell whether these experiences are in fact true, unless the source is verifiable from an article.  It is always best to check with your doctor before administering supplements to your children.

There are no reported side effects for low doses of Resveratrol. However if given in high amounts there is a risk of toxicity.  Therefore dosages have to be researched carefully as and a doctor should be consulted before usage.

Resveratrol is a powerful and often under-estimated ingredient, which can be found in Brain Fuel Plus that offers 13 natural ingredients.

Grape Seed Extract

Grape seed extract is derived from whole grape seeds and is also known as a polyphenol antioxidant.

Grape seed extract can also act as a blood thinner so it should be used with caution when taken with other medications.  Grape seed extract is also a natural antihistamine.

In one research study, which involved participants with ADHD, over 80 percent of individuals found their mood to improve when their allergies did because they were given grape seed extract.

The active ingredients in grape seed extract are oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs).

In another study in Tulsa, Oklahoma it was found that adults and children scored better on an administered test after taking OPCs as opposed to taking medication (stimulants) that they were on earlier.  The OPCs were found to reduce hyperactivity and increase focus and attention.

Almost as Powerful as Ritalin

Another researcher compared the benefits of grape seed extract to the effectiveness of Ritalin in improving symptoms of ADHD.

However, it is not advisable for children to take grape seed extract because of its potency, children can reap the benefits of the OPCs by eating the whole fruit (grapes) or using grape seed oil in cooking.

The way grape seed works on individuals with ADHD is that these individuals are prone to having more allergies and sensitivities or lacking essential fatty acids (linoleic acid is also found in grape seed).  OPCs also aid in the absorption of Vitamin C which supports the production of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine are responsible for regulating the body’s system and hyperactivity.

Because the OPCs support the production of these neurotransmitters, the system is regulated more and the hyperactivity may be treated.

Therefore the grape seed treats these ailments which improves mood in general.  Neurotransmitters are chemicals which carry signals or information from one brain cell to another.

In another study, grape seed extract was found to kill off more than half of the cancerous cells in Leukemia patients within 24 hours of taking it.  In the same study, normal cells were unharmed.  This study was conducted with adults.

OPCs have an anti-inflammatory effect and have ability to lower leukotriene (something that is produced in our body as a response to inflammation).

In a study conducted in 2011, grape seed extract was found to decrease inflammation in the airway and also increase immunity in its subjects.

There are typically no side effects to grape seed oil but some mild effects are reported such as dizziness, indigestions, headache and blood pressure elevation.

Sensoril

Sensoril is a branded ingredient extracted from ashwagandha, which is a plant in the nightshade family.  Sensoril has been developed to contain a higher number of bioactives and is therefore more potent.

Ashwagandha is also known under different names such as withania somnifera, or winter berry.  ashwagandha is an herb commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to calm the body from stressors in everyday life.

A great body of research exists in children with ADHD and with ashwgandha specifically as opposed to Sensoril.  Since ashwagandha is safe to use with children, it can be examined in its direct benefits on children.

In one study, including 120 children diagnosed with ADHD, an herbal compound containing ashwagandha was taken.  Over 4 months, the group who received the compound showed better outcomes than a group who did not take it.

The measure in a test for attention and impulsivity was given and the participants who took the compound were also found to have improved a great degree in the scores.

In another study, children with ADHD that were given ashwagandha and also an Ayurvedic healing technique were found to have better control of their symptoms.

Ayurveda is a practice that includes the min-body therapies of meditation, yoga, diet and taking specific herbs.

Stimulates Growth of Neurons

The way that ashwagandha is known to work on the brain of those with ADHD is that it stimulates growth of neurons (a neuron is a brain cell that transmits and processes information through electric and chemical signals) and it also supports the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which is responsible for thinking and memory.

You can avoid side effects of ashwagandha such as vomiting, diarrhea and upset stomach by researching and finding the correct dosage for children.

It is always advisable to consult with an appropriate doctor to find out this information.  It is recommended to limit the usage to no more than six months at a time.

Sensoril has been tested in human trials and has been found to lower cortisol levels and enhance mood and cognition.

Sensoril can lower the need to over eat because it produces an overall feeling of calm which in turn lowers the incidence of stress eating.

Sensoril has been known to be helpful in treating asthma.  Sensoril can reduce inflammation and in asthma it is the bronchial tubes which become inflamed prohibiting airflow.

Sensoril has also been known by researchers to reduce anxiety in individuals with Generalized Anxiety Disorder.  Recent research shows that Sensoril enhances cognition in individuals diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.

In adults, there is no maximum time limit for taking Sensoril.  There are no reported side effects.

Although it is recommended to keep out of reach of children, there have been many reports of adults offering Sensoril to their children to ease anxiety, increase concentration and focus, increase relaxed sleep and decrease irritability.

Again, it is advisable to consult with a certified health practitioner before thinking about administering Sensoril to your child.  There is no body of research found that includes child subjects regarding Sensoril intake.
